My Maharashtrian Prawn curry!!

One of my new year resolutions was to learn to make maharashtrian sea food, to get it exactly right i took notes from a lot of lovely maharashtrian ladies, and ate loads of their food. After three months of eating and learning and experimenting, i decided it was time for me to stand on my own feet!! I tried to recreate this wonderful prawn curry i ate in alibaug...didnt taste the same but was quite yummy, even if i say so myself.

So heres the recipe..i tried to make it as precise as possible.

What you need
2 cups prawns, cleaned and de-veined
1 cup grated coconut
1 onion super finely chopped
1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
A few cloves, green cardamom, jeera, corriander seeds, saunf, peppercorns all slightly bashed up together
2 spoons of ginger garlic paste
1 tsp. red chili powder
1/2cup tamarind juice (extract after adding warm water)

How:

1) Clean the prawns, apply a little salt and turmeric to them and set aside.
2) Heat a little oil in a pan and fry all the ingredients except onion, tamarind Juice
and salt till the coconut turns light brown.
3) Grind all the ingredients to a paste, coarse or fine depending on whether or not you like the feel of coconut in your mouth.
4) Heat a little oil in the kadai and fry onion till it turns light brown.
5) Add the prawns and sauté for a min.
6) Add the ground spices and sauté; add tamarind juice and 1 cup water
7) Cook for 3-4 minutes or till the prawns are cooked. Add more water based on how thick you want the gravy!!

Try it, encourage your maharshtrian friends to try it and let me know if I have learnt well!
