Cooking it up in Srilanka

Glimpses from my day long cooking course at Unawatuna

Course begins with a Tuk tuk ride to Galle market to buy the days fresh haul of fruits and veggies. We choose bright orange pumpkin, juicy pineapples, onions, potatoes, fiery green chillies and a big bunch of curry leaves.

Next stop, the spice store where we picked up some curry powder, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla.

And last item on our shopping list...Fish!

Our ammunition ready, we headed back to Sonhas Health Food restaurant for our class to be conducted by the vivacious Karuna.

Our menu for the day

  • Devilled Potatoes
  • Pumpkin Curry
  • Pineapple curry
  • Fish Curry with brown rice
  • Watalapan (traditional Srilankan dessert)

Nicole, John. Dominic and me led by the very able Karuna grated, chopped, squeezed, steamed, fried and ate to our hearts content.

*All recipes to follow.
